Update on life and pics from the honeymoon!

Hello everyone!
It's been a while since we last posted. We were enjoying our newlyweds time together!
We wanted to share a couple of our fabulous honeymoon photos that we took while we were over in Greece. Since it's now the middle of winter and the snow has finally arrived here - we thought it would be a great time to reminisce about our meditteraen times - complete with sun, great
Greek food, swimming and fun.

We just recieved some proofs of our wedding photos online. It was fabulous to see them! I think they look nice despite the fact that it was pouring rain during most of them.

We're working on getting some of our honeymoon pictures up soon. We've been so busy since we got back that we haven't had a chance yet to get them developed. Sarah is taking them in today so we should have some to post in a few days.

We're busy working on all our thank you cards! Please don't think we've forgotten about you! We're so thankfull to everyone and will send our cards out this week! We hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

In memoriam - Lilyan Gertrude Fenn

Sadly on Monday, July 10, 2006 at Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Orillia in her 96th year, Lilyan Fenn passed away.

Lilyan was Sarah's great aunt and attended our wedding in June. Despite the nasty rain and cold, Lilyan was full of grace and charm the entire evening. At 95 years old, Lilyan was our oldest guest - although you would never guess it because of her boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Lilyan was the beloved wife of the late James A. Fenn, mother of Katherine and husband Ron Huffman of Orillia. She was also the dear grandmother of Ronalee and John Clark, Nancy and John Evans, and Sarah and Sandy Fryfogel; great grandmother of Brett and Brandon Clark, Adam and Sheila Evans, and James, Helen and Sebastian Fryfogel.

Lilyan was laid to rest on Friday, July 14th beside her husband in St. James Cemetery, Orillia.

She will be greatly missed.

We're Back!

Hi Everyone!

We're finally home after our wonderful honeymoon. We arrived back in Ottawa on Saturday night after travelling for almost 24 hours straight, and the next day we drove back to Toronto. We were a bit jet lagged but it was nice to be home and see our cat, Annie.

Our time in Rhodes after Athens was much more peaceful. We spent the last part of our honeymoon lying on sun drenched beaches and wandering through medieval towns. It was the perfect end to our Greek adventure.

Thank you to everyone again, for coming to our wedding. We promise to be in touch soon and post pictures from both the wedding and honeymoon!

Tear gas, ancient Roman toilets and shopping!

Hi Everyone!

Sarah and I want to make a big thank you to all of you for coming to our wedding and surviving the evening despite the rain and the precarious nature of our tent! We had a wonderful time! It was an evening to remember! Another big thank you to everyone else who kept pumping out the rain from the ceiling so there wouldn't be a disaster! :)

Sarah and I are in beautiful, sunny Greece right now. It is wonderfully warm, and there has not been a cloudy day since we arrived. I don't have any pictures to post because we are Luddites and don't have a digital camera yet. As soon as we return I will post as many pictures as I can.

We arrived in Athens on Monday and spent three days there. It was amazing. We hiked to the top of the Acropolis, which is really quite high. The marble steps are very slippery from centuries of use, so hiking up them is not for the faint of heart. In certain places there is a shear drop of a few hundred feet. There are so many ruins and ancient structures in Athens, one could lose track! We've seen ancient Roman toilets, early Christian churches, ancient Greek markets...It's been absolutely stunning!

On Thursday, there was a big demonstration of university students and teachers. It turned into a full scale riot. They set fire to cars in the street, smashed ATM's and generally ran amok. The police dressed in full riot gear and gas masks, used tear gas and rubber bullets to try to disperse the crowd. This went on all day.

Unfortunately, at different points, both Sarah and I were caught up in the mayhem. That afternoon, Sarah had decided to go shopping and I went to look at more Roman mosaics, and the ancient Temple of Zeus. I think Sarah had seen enough ruins to last a lifetime by that point and Athens' wonderful shoe stores were calling! :) Anyway, that afternoon we had decided to do our own thing and meet back at the hotel around 6pm to go for dinner.

Shortly after parting with Sarah, I came upon the protest as I neared the Greek parliament buildings. At that point it was still peaceful. Being from Canada, I did not notice the ominous signs of Greek shop owners closing their doors and pulling the metal grates down over their shop fronts, as anything unusual. I thought, "oh wow! A protest! Neat! Let's get closer."

I noticed some news crews taking pictures and shooting video, so I went over and stood with them. I started to take some pictures, but then my camera ran out of film. So while I was fiddling with my bag trying to find a new roll, the line of police officers began to march past us, about 100 feet to the left, towards the crowd. I remember thinking, "Why are they wearing gas masks?"

It was then that the first Molotov cocktail was thrown. Suddenly the street was filled with fire and shouting. This was probably about fifty feet from where I was. At this point I started to get a little nervous and wonder if I shouldn't maybe get back. When the first tear gas canister was fired. Suddenly there were huge bursts of white smoke and screaming. The crowd went crazy, lobbing more Molotov cocktails. I started to run, along with the news crew, with my camera half open from changing the film roll. My eyes and mouth started to burn like crazy from the tear gas. I don't think I can possibly describe the feeling - it was intensely painful. I couldn't see and I was coughing uncontrollably. Through my blurred, burning vision I followed some people into a nearby park where there was a fountain. For the next 45 minutes I was washing my face, eyes and drinking water trying to get the burning to stop. "At least," I thought, "the protest is no where near Sarah."

At that moment, Sarah was still unaware of the protest. But the offensive of the police had the unforeseen consequence of driving the protesters away, out of the area of the parliament buildings and into the shopping district. While I was still washing the tear gas out of my eyes. She came out of the shopping centre and noticed white smoke everywhere and a pile of burning tires by the door. "Why are my throat and eyes burning?" she thought to herself, when she noticed people running through the square, holding cloths over their faces. Sarah went back inside the shopping mall and huddled inside with other shoppers. About a half hour later, Sarah decided that she wanted to try to get back to the hotel. She went out on the street, hurried down an alleyway away from the protest and hopped in a cab. The cab driver took pity on her and whisked her away back to the hotel.

I walked home, worried sick about Sarah, always trying to keep my distance from the protest, which had now spilled past the shopping district and was close to our hotel. When I finally got back to the hotel, I was overjoyed to see Sarah was safe. For the next two hours we excitedly traded stories, while the sound of police sirens and the smell of tear gas wafted through our bedroom window. It was certainly a very exciting day. Before I had to run for my life, I did manage to take a few pictures, so I can't wait to get them developed back home.

Today Sarah and I are in Rhodes City, on the island of Rhodes. It is beautiful, but very touristy. We stayed in a hotel for the past two nights that was built in 1280 A.D. The whole part of the old city is amazing. Most of the medieval buildings remain, so it is a maze of twisty little streets, little cafes and bars, and street vendors. This afternoon we pick up our rental car and head for the ancient town of Lindos along the coast. We will be there for the next week, staying in a little apartment with our own kitchen. I am looking forward to relaxing on the beach. On Friday we return to Athens for one more night, then fly home the next day.

We miss you all! A big thank you to everyone who is looking after our little girl, Annie the cat, while we are away! We will see you soon!

Transportation Offered from your motel and back!

Hello everyone!

Christian and I wanted to ensure everyone has a good time so we've organized a yellow school bus to pick up guests, that is anyone who wishes to use it, at their motel/B&B and take you to the ceremony and then drop you off at various times later that evening.

Keep an eye out for a schedule coming to an email near you! As well, a flyer with the schedule will be made available at the reception desks of the motels & B&Bs.

We want to make sure that everyone has a fabulous and safe party!

The Crunch is coming...I can feel it...

So, Christian made me sit down at this computer (which I do all day) so I'm not usually too keen on doing it at night...to provide everyone with an update - so here it comes:

I can feel it in the background of my mind every day. The Crunch is coming. Very soon. I think it's the time in any event planning/project where you know everything must in place, everything had to be ordered, everyone involved had to be talked to, everything on the list had to be crossed out (especially as a 'list' driven person).
The Crunch is almost here.

Christian was a sweetie and went and measured the Knudsens property to see where we are fitting the big tent and all of you. (Sorry Dad, how do you feel about being placed next to the porta-potties? ha!ha!)

So let's take stock of where things are at:
- invites - out in the mail (hope you got yours?)
- RSVPs - coming in...(did you send yours back?)
- caterer - good to go! just finalizing details.
- photographer - booked & met in person
- flowers - ordered!
- wine - made (thanks Dad!)
- Minister - booked & met (still details to be worked out here...)
- rental tents etc. - almost there!
- dress - first fitting coming up in April
- honeymoon - 50 % done - still shopping around for prices/locations
- personal grooming in prep for wedding pics
- centrepieces - taken care of - thank you Cathy & Gisela!
Well, you get the picture.

So next steps are:
1. Finalize honeymoon
2. Finalize lay-out of tent/set-up
3. Ensure Christian get something to wear for the day. (Christian? you are on top of this..right?)
etc. etc.
This list is obviously too long to put here...but you get the idea.

Anyhoo - enough about me and the wedding...ok, so it turns out it's all about me and the wedding these days...do I like this attention? do I hate this attention? That shall have to be another blog entry into the very complicated mind of Sarah Fink.
On that note - ta! ta! for now (TTFN).

Invitations are in the Mail!

Hey everyone!
So the reality of the wedding is upon us...
I've booked a dress fitting, bought centrepieces, organizing a 'Jack & Jill party' and have booked part of the honeymoon. As well, I finally located a photographer who is available and is the photojournalistic style we'd like.

It's becoming a reality!
Expect to receive your invitation very soon...
Be sure to book your accomodation ASAP as well :)

Word of the Day is - BRIDEZILLA:
Today's word is a combination of bride and Godzilla, the mutant dinosaur created by U.S. hydrogen bomb testing in the Pacific that, in numerous films in the 50s and 60s, would wade onto land and destroy everything in its path. The bridal version of this monster is created by the maniacal need to have "the perfect day" and she'll walk over anyone and everything to get it.
The tricky thing about 'bridezillas' is that their transition from sweethearts to creatures from hell cannot be foreseen, not even by the future husbands.

The invitation is almost finished!

Hi Everyone!

Christian has kindly set up this blog for me , so that I can update everyone on a regular basis on our wedding plans. I'm feeling a little stressed because the federal election has interfered with my timeline. For those of you that don't know, I was the a campaign manager for the Liberal party in the Canadian federal election which happened on January 23rd. Now that it is finished, I am trying to get caught up.

Today, Alejandra and I did the final design on the wedding invitation - it looks fabulous! Thanks so much to Ale! Check it out on this website. This week I'm also going to be calling everyone to get your full mailing addresses and confirming the date (that's Saturday, June 3rd 2006).

Thanks for taking a look at our new website! Sarah and I have been really busy getting ready for the wedding in June! We really looking forward to it! Please check back at this website often for updates and wedding news.
